The Kano State Ministry of Health and the Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Board (KSPHCMB), in collaboration with MSI International, have concluded a two-day capacity-building training for Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officers from the state’s 44 Local Government Areas to strengthen health data management and improve evidence-based decision-making.

The training, held at Butterfly Garden Hotel, Kaduna, from August 22 to 23, 2026, focused on enhancing data management, reporting, monitoring, and planning for family planning and other critical health interventions across Kano State.

Speaking at the event, the Director General of the Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Board, Professor Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim, described the M&E Officers as the “engine room” of the state’s health information system, commending their dedication to improving the quality and reliability of health data.
He noted that Kano State’s remarkable progress in health data management has earned recognition at both state and national levels, including commendation from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).
Professor Ibrahim also applauded the continued commitment of the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, to strengthening healthcare delivery through strategic investments, including free maternal healthcare services in 484 Apex Health Facilities, the provision of 500 free Caesarean Sections every month, and the supply of free Maternal and Child Health (MCH) commodities valued at between ₦50 million and ₦60 million.
During the training, participants reviewed progress recorded through outreach activities, MS Ladies service channels, and other family planning interventions. They also examined challenges affecting monthly reporting from health facilities, identified existing gaps in data collection and reporting, and developed practical strategies to improve data quality, completeness, and timeliness.
In her presentation, the Regional Manager, North-West I, MSI Nigeria Reproductive Choices, Hajiya Suwaiba Abubakar, highlighted the Expanding Access to Family Planning Project being implemented in Kano and Kaduna States.
She explained that the project aims to increase access to comprehensive family planning services, expand contraceptive method choices, and accelerate Nigeria’s progress toward achieving the Family Planning 2030 (FP2030) commitments, with special emphasis on first-time parents and postpartum family planning users.
The partnership between the Kano State Government and MSI International is expected to strengthen the capacity of M&E Officers across all 44 Local Government Areas, improve the quality and timeliness of health data, and enhance evidence-based planning, accountability, and decision-making in healthcare delivery.
The initiative will also contribute to expanding access to quality family planning services, increasing client uptake, improving adolescent and youth access to reproductive health services, and achieving better health outcomes across Kano State.
