An Islamic scholar, Ustaz Auwal Abdulkarim, has called on Muslims to take advantage of the immense spiritual rewards associated with fasting on the ninth and tenth days of the month of Muharram (1448 AH).
Delivering a sermon at the Izala Mosque on Mary Slessor Street in Calabar, Cross River State, Ustaz Abdulkarim encouraged the faithful to observe the voluntary fast of Tasu’a (9th Muharram) and Ashura (10th Muharram), describing the two days as periods of abundant blessings and divine mercy.
Obedience to Parents Is Key to Success, Says Islamic Cleric
Quoting the traditions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the cleric said those who fast on these blessed days stand to receive Allah’s immense rewards and forgiveness. He explained that the Prophet observed the fast of Ashura and expressed his intention to also fast on the ninth day if he lived to witness the following year, in order to distinguish the practice of Muslims.
Ustaz Abdulkarim further noted that the fast of Ashura has its origins in the time of Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him), when Allah granted victory to the Children of Israel. He said Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) affirmed and encouraged the observance of the fast, making it a highly recommended Sunnah for Muslims.
He urged Muslims to emulate the practice of the Prophet by observing the fast and increasing acts of worship throughout the sacred month of Muharram.
