Katsina, UNDP Validate Climate Displacement Report

The Katsina State Government, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has validated a comprehensive report on climate and conflict-induced displacement, migration, access to basic services and livelihood patterns across the state.
The validation exercise, organised by the Katsina State Bureau of Statistics, brought together academics, government officials, technical experts, development partners and representatives of relevant agencies to review the findings and identify evidence-based interventions for addressing displacement and climate-related challenges.

Speaking at the event, the Statistician-General of the Katsina State Bureau of Statistics, Professor Saifullahi Sani Matazu, said reliable data remains critical for understanding the challenges facing communities and for formulating effective government policies.
Professor Matazu disclosed that the assessment covered all 34 Local Government Areas and 361 wards in the state, with data collected from more than 18,800 households.
He explained that climate change continues to exert pressure on key natural resources, including grazing lands, water sources and forests, thereby threatening livelihoods and increasing the potential for conflicts between farming and pastoral communities.
According to him, encroachment on grazing reserves and stock routes, rapid population growth and changing land-use patterns have further intensified competition over scarce resources.
The Statistician-General said the validated report would guide government and development partners in prioritising interventions, assigning implementation responsibilities and establishing effective monitoring mechanisms to track progress.
He noted that the exercise aligns with the Katsina State Government’s environmental initiatives, including the KT1T programme, which promotes tree planting and combats environmental degradation.
Professor Matazu commended the UNDP for its technical and financial support, describing the partnership as vital to strengthening the state’s capacity to address climate-related vulnerabilities and provide durable solutions to displacement.
He called for sustained collaboration among government institutions, development partners and other stakeholders to translate the report’s findings into practical actions that will improve livelihoods, enhance resilience and reduce vulnerabilities across the state.
