Kano Municipal Launches Six-Day Big Catch-Up Immunization Campaign to Reach Missed Children

The Big Catch-Up Stakeholders Committee on Routine Immunization in Kano Municipal Local Government Area has officially commenced activities for the implementation of a six-day intensive immunization campaign aimed at increasing vaccination coverage among children and other eligible beneficiaries across the Local Government Area.
In a statement signed by Zahraddeen Usman Kofar Nasarawa Zonal Information officer Kano Municipal Zone stated that, As part of preparations for the exercise, the committee, with support from the Primary Health Care sector and development partners, convened a stakeholders’ engagement meeting at Sharada Primary Health Care Centre and surrounding communities to finalize strategies ahead of the campaign, which begins on 16 June 2026.

Representing the Executive Chairman of Kano Municipal Local Government, the Deputy Council Leader, Hon. Ismail Garba, alongside the Supervisory Councillor for the Medical Department, Hon. Mustapha Usman Darma, reaffirmed the Local Government’s commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of the exercise.
They highlighted the critical role of immunization in preventing vaccine-preventable diseases, reducing child mortality, and promoting healthier communities. They also urged parents, community leaders, religious leaders, and other stakeholders to support the campaign by mobilizing eligible children and beneficiaries to receive the required vaccines.
Speaking during the meeting, the Local Immunization Officer (LIO), Alhaji Rabiu Muktar, and the Health Educator, Umar Mukhtar, commended stakeholders for their active participation and dedication to improving immunization coverage within the Local Government Area.
They expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness demonstrated by all stakeholders and emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration to achieve the campaign’s objectives.
Also addressing participants, UNICEF representative, Hajiya Aisha, applauded stakeholders for their commitment to safeguarding the health of children. She reaffirmed UNICEF’s continued support for immunization programmes and expressed confidence that the campaign would record significant success through collective action and community engagement.
The Education Secretary of Kano Municipal Local Education Authority, Alhaji Sani Suleiman, also pledged the support of schools within the Local Government Area. He assured participants that educational institutions would work closely with health authorities to ensure that every eligible child is reached during the campaign.
The Big Catch-Up Immunization Campaign primarily targets children aged 0 to 23 months who have missed routine vaccinations, while routine immunization services will also be provided for children up to 24 months of age. Additional vaccination services will be offered to eligible girls and other target groups in accordance with national immunization guidelines.
The stakeholders’ meeting attracted approximately twenty participants, including community leaders, health officials, education representatives, development partners, religious leaders, and other key stakeholders. Discussions focused on effective community mobilization, awareness creation, and strategies to ensure that no eligible child is left behind.
The Big Catch-Up initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen routine immunization services, improve vaccine uptake, and protect children against vaccine-preventable diseases, thereby contributing to better health outcomes across Kano Municipal Local Government Area.
