The five-day learning visit by the Kano State Ministry of Health delegation to Rwanda brought together senior health officials to exchange knowledge on health system strengthening, quality healthcare, digital health, financing and institutional reforms aimed at improving healthcare delivery in Kano State.
Led by the Director-General of the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board (KSPHCMB), Professor Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim, the delegation included the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), Dr. Rahila Muktar Aliyu; the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Health Trust Fund (KHETFUND), Dr. Fatima Usman Zahradeen; Director of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation, Muhammad Nura Yahya; and Director of Public Health, Dr. Aliyu Ibrahim Gano.

The study tour also featured visits to key health institutions in Rwanda, where participants examined practical approaches to health insurance, digital health systems, quality improvement, institutional coordination and evidence-based healthcare planning. The delegation explored lessons that could be adapted to strengthen Kano State’s healthcare system and improve access to quality health services.
As part of the programme, the delegation paid a solemn visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial to honour the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The visit provided an opportunity to reflect on Rwanda’s remarkable journey of resilience, reconciliation and national transformation, while highlighting the importance of visionary leadership, strong institutions and long-term development planning.
The learning tour, supported by SANHDEF, underscores the Kano State Government’s commitment to continuous learning, strategic partnerships and the adoption of global best practices to build a more resilient, efficient and people-centred healthcare system.
