LAWMAKERS, HEALTH STAKEHOLDERS CONVENE IN KADUNA TO REFORM KANO’S HEALTH LEGISLATION

The Kano State House of Assembly has kicked off a three-day workshop aimed at reviewing and harmonising the proposed amendment to the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board (KSPHCMB) Bill 2026 at Bafra International Hotel in Kaduna State, the workshop carries the theme “Strengthening the Legal and Institutional Framework for Effective Healthcare Delivery in Kano State: Legislative Engagement, Harmonisation and Reform.”
In a statement signed by the Public Relations officer of the Board Sa’adatu Suleiman stressed that, The gathering brings together lawmakers, health-sector leaders, technical experts and other stakeholders to examine three critical health-sector Bills: the KSPHCMB Bill, the Drug and Medical Consumables Supply Agency (DMCSA) Bill, and the Health Training Institute Bill. The KSPHCMB Bill proposes amendments to the existing 2014 law, with the review being led by the Board’s Director-General, Professor Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim, to reinforce its legal and institutional framework and bring its mandate in line with current primary healthcare priorities.
Delivering special remarks, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, underscored the role of strong legislation in enhancing coordination, accountability and sustainable healthcare delivery across the state. Opening the workshop on behalf of the Speaker, Rt. Honourable Ismaila Jibril Falgore, the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Honourable Muhammadu Bello Butu-Butu, who represents Rimin Gado/Tofa Constituency, urged sustained collaboration among lawmakers, technical experts and stakeholders in crafting effective health legislation.
In his welcome address, Professor Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim, Director-General of KSPHCMB, emphasised the value of a robust legal and institutional framework in consolidating progress and improving service delivery. He encouraged full participation throughout the engagement and voiced confidence that the review process would strengthen institutional effectiveness, accountability and healthcare delivery outcomes.
The Kano State House of Assembly and KSPHCMB extend appreciation to FCDO Lafiya, SANHDEF and the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) for their support toward the successful execution of the workshop.
