The Chairman of the NUJ Kano State Online Media Chapel, Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, has charged media professionals to adhere strictly to professional ethics and responsible reporting as the countdown to the 2027 general elections begins.
Comrade Dangambo issued the call on Thursday during the official commissioning of the newly renovated office of M Kano TV Online Media, located at Kofar Mazugal in the Kano metropolis.
Accompanied by members of the Chapel’s Executive Council, the Chairman lauded the Chief Executive Officer of M Kano TV, Musbahu Kano, for upgrading the facility to a standard befitting a modern digital media house. He described the investment as a benchmark for others, noting that a visible physical office boosts public trust, credibility, and accountability in online journalism.
“I urge every online media practitioner to emulate this gesture. An identifiable office is not just a structure—it is a statement of seriousness and a guarantee to your audience that you can be held accountable,” Dangambo said.
Turning his focus to the upcoming election cycle, the Chairman issued a stern warning against sensationalism and manipulation, urging journalists to resist political actors and individuals who may seek to weaponize their platforms for fake news or defamatory content.
He also prioritized the safety of journalists, reminding them that no story is worth their lives.
“It is better to report alive than to be reported dead. Your safety is paramount, especially now that the 2027 campaign atmosphere is already heating up,” he cautioned.
In a move to further sanitize the digital media space, Dangambo revealed that the National Assembly is currently considering legislation that would mandate online media organizations to maintain verifiable physical addresses. Such a law, he explained, would curb the activities of fake journalists, reduce misinformation, and strengthen legal accountability across the industry.
The Chapel Chairman reaffirmed the body’s dedication to continuous training and capacity-building programmes, designed to distinguish trained professionals from citizen journalists and social media influencers, while also fostering peace-building reportage on security matters such as banditry and insurgency.
“We have a critical role to play in national security and development. Our reportage must be measured, factual, and always in the interest of public safety,” he added.
In his response, Musbahu Kano, CEO of M Kano TV, expressed gratitude to the NUJ Online Chapel leadership for honouring the invitation. He noted that the renovated office was part of his commitment to providing a conducive work environment for his staff and a welcoming space for guests.
“We at M Kano TV remain resolute in upholding the principles of professional journalism. This commissioning is not an end but a renewed pledge to serve the public with integrity,” Kano assured.
