NUJ National Trustee Abbas Ibrahim Resigns to Pursue Kano Deputy Governorship Bid

A National Trustee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Northwest Zone A, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, has resigned from his position to pursue a political career as the Labour Party’s deputy governorship candidate for Kano State.
Abbas announced his resignation in an interview with FAME NEWS correspondent, explaining that the decision was guided by ethical considerations and the need to avoid any conflict of interest between his union responsibilities and his political ambition.
According to him, stepping down from active union leadership was necessary to uphold the ethical standards expected of a labour and professional union leader.
“I am now contesting for the position of Deputy Governor of Kano State on the platform of the Labour Party,” he stated.
He said his decision to join partisan politics was motivated by a desire to contribute more directly to the development of Kano State through public service, adding that he responded to calls from members of the public and other stakeholders both within the state and at the national level.
Abbas further disclosed that the Labour Party had unanimously endorsed him as its deputy governorship candidate alongside the party’s governorship candidate, Alhaji Hamisu San Turaki.
A veteran trade unionist, Abbas Ibrahim has built a distinguished career in labour leadership spanning several decades. He previously served as Chairman of the Radio Kano Chapel of the NUJ, Chairman of the NUJ Kano State Council for two terms, and Assistant Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kano State Council.
During his tenure as Chairman of the NUJ Kano State Council, he was credited with introducing reforms aimed at strengthening the union and enhancing its financial sustainability. One of the landmark projects initiated under his leadership was the establishment of the NUJ Plaza at the union’s secretariat, conceived as an income-generating venture to improve the council’s financial base.
Abbas formally submitted his resignation letter during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Nigeria Union of Journalists held in Jigawa State on Tuesday, bringing to a close his active service in the union as he embarks on his political journey.
