Gwarzo Traders Seek Modernisation of Main Market

Traders and business operators at the Gwarzo Main Market have appealed to the Kano State Government and the Gwarzo Local Government Council to undertake a comprehensive modernisation of the market to improve commercial activities and boost the local economy.
The appeal was made during an inspection visit to the market by the Gwarzo Zonal Information Officer, Auwalu Musa Yola, who interacted with traders and business owners to assess the condition of the market and gather firsthand information on the challenges affecting their operations.
The traders called on Governor Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Executive Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government, Dr. Mani Tsoho Gwarzo, to provide modern market stalls, public toilets, effective drainage systems, guest accommodation facilities, improved security infrastructure, and solar-powered street lighting.
Speaking during the visit, Buhari Bala Gwarzo said the weekly Friday market remains a major commercial centre serving Gwarzo and neighbouring communities but continues to face significant infrastructural challenges. He noted that inadequate sanitation facilities, poor drainage, and the absence of modern market structures have negatively affected business activities, particularly during the rainy season.
According to him, upgrading the market would create a more conducive business environment, stimulate economic activities, and generate employment opportunities for youths and residents.
Also speaking, grain merchant Auwalu Hashim urged both the state and local governments to urgently address the recurring flooding caused by the absence of proper drainage channels, describing the situation as a major obstacle to smooth trading operations.
The Chairman of the Sugarcane Sellers Association, Abdulmalik Shehu Kofar Fada Gwarzo, appealed for the construction of modern shops and the installation of solar-powered street lights to improve security and enhance the market’s attractiveness to traders and visitors from neighbouring local government areas.
The traders described Gwarzo Main Market as one of the largest and most important commercial centres in the region, attracting buyers and sellers from across surrounding communities. They stressed that the market deserves priority attention through comprehensive infrastructural development to reflect its strategic role in regional trade and economic growth.
They expressed confidence that the Kano State Government and the Gwarzo Local Government Council would positively respond to their appeal by transforming the market into a modern commercial hub capable of enhancing economic development and improving the livelihoods of the people.
