KNSG Cracks Down on Illegal Demolition and Alleged Sale of Watari Bridge Land
The Kano State Government has halted the alleged illegal allocation and sale of land at the site of the old Watari Bridge, demolished structures under construction on the disputed land, and arrested individuals allegedly involved in the demolition and unlawful development of the area.
The Commissioner for Lands and Physical Planning stated that the government took swift action after receiving reports that some individuals were claiming to have obtained approval to allocate plots of land on the site of the old bridge. He explained that the bridge has served as a vital transportation route for more than 50 years, linking communities including Janguza, Kabo, Karaye, and Rogo.

The Commissioner stressed that the state government would not tolerate any attempt to illegally convert public infrastructure into private property. He disclosed that vehicles and equipment used in the illegal operation would be confiscated, while those arrested would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Residents of the area said they woke up to find people demolishing parts of the old bridge while claiming that the land had been sold to them. They alleged that despite efforts by community members to stop the demolition, the individuals continued the work under the protection of heavily armed police officers. According to the residents, they were informed that the land had been sold by the Kumbotso Local Government Council.
The residents described the old bridge as an essential public facility that has served the surrounding communities for decades. They expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for his prompt intervention and commended the Kano State Government for taking decisive action. They also prayed for the success of the government in ensuring justice and protecting public assets for the benefit of all citizens.
