Kano Government Increases Minimum Monthly Pension from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000

The Kano State Government has approved an increase in the minimum monthly pension for retired civil servants from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000, as part of ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of pensioners across the state.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Kano State Chapter, Comrade Shuaib Musa-Jibrin, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano.
According to Musa-Jibrin, the upward review followed fruitful discussions between the Kano State Government and representatives of pensioners. He noted that the administration has also made significant progress in settling outstanding pension-related liabilities inherited from previous administrations.
He revealed that out of the approximately ₦48.6 billion backlog of pension arrears and entitlements, the state government has so far paid nearly ₦32 billion, while efforts are ongoing to clear the remaining balance.
The NUP Chairman further commended the government for ensuring the prompt payment of monthly pensions, stating that retirees now receive their pensions consistently between the 23rd and 25th of every month.
Musa-Jibrin also praised the government’s decision to discontinue certain deductions previously made from retirees’ pensions, describing the move as a major relief that has eased the financial burden on pensioners and boosted their morale.
He expressed appreciation to the Kano State Government for its commitment to improving the living conditions of retired public servants through timely pension payments and sustained reforms in the pension administration system.
