Politics in Kano has never lacked drama, but rarely does it produce a story as defiant and dignified as that of Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, the respected former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly and current Member representing Rano, Bunkure, and Kibiya Federal Constituency.
When the NNPP wave swept through Kano in the 2023 elections, Rurum, with his unmatched political influence — emerged victorious under the party’s banner. But what awaited him was not the ideal of progress and unity he envisioned. It was a regime of arrogance, humiliation, and blind dictatorship.

At the centre of that storm was Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the self-styled leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement — a group that has long mistaken loyalty for worship and party leadership for total submission.
Hon. Rurum was never the kind to bow to tyranny. A man of class, intellect, and self-respect, he refused to become another puppet in the hands of a self-glorified emperor who thrived on intimidation and insults.
His independent mind and strong personality became a threat to Kwankwasiyya’s cultic command structure. And when they couldn’t control him, they tried to break him with verbal assaults, lies, and coordinated blackmail.
They called him names. They fabricated stories. They unleashed social media trolls.
But Rurum, in his usual calm and strategic manner, answered them not with noise, but with monumental achievements.
When he realized that the NNPP had become nothing but Kwankwaso’s personal estate, Rurum took a bold and irreversible step, he decamped to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It wasn’t just a political move; it was a liberation act.
A loud rejection of political slavery.
A declaration that dignity is greater than dictatorship. Rurum walked away from the insults, leaving behind the noise and joining a platform where merit and respect still meant something.
Instead of trading words with his detractors, Rurum built a legacy of delivery. He proved that true leaders respond with action. He became the first pioneer in Kano to introduce mobile cash empowerment, directly transferring funds to constituents through verified phone alerts, a system that eliminated middlemen and ensured transparency.
From monetary empowerment to youth inclusion, from education support to agricultural boost, Rurum has transformed Rano, Bunkure, and Kibiya into a model of effective representation.
His record includes:
-Thousands of beneficiaries receiving direct bank empowerment.
-Distribution of motorcycles, sewing machines, fertilizer, and irrigation equipment.
-Electrification of rural communities and construction of feeder roads.
-Educational sponsorships for indigent students.
-Women and youth empowerment on an unprecedented scale.
These were not photo ops — they were proofs of his silent revolution. Today, even his critics admit one truth, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum is unstoppable.
He left the cultic arrogance of Kwankwasiyya behind and now flourishes in a party that values maturity, intellect, and genuine leadership.
His journey is the perfect lesson to those who still bow at the altar of political gods:
While Kwankwaso’s disciples waste energy on propaganda, Rurum’s achievements speak for him. He has become the mirror of dignity and the symbol of political independence in Kano South.
History would justifiably remember him. From humiliation to honor, from insult to impact. Rurum has proven that silence can be the loudest form of victory.
He broke free from the chains of political servitude and emerged as APC’s finest example of class, courage, and competence.
