Rano Emirate Poised for Continued Progress Under Emir Muhammad Isa Umaru

As we entered new year, the Rano Emirate stands firmly positioned for sustained peace, development, and social cohesion under the leadership of His Highness, Ambassador Dr. Muhammad Isa Umaru. One of the historic emirates in Kano State and a prominent part of the ancient Hausa Kingdoms under the Sokoto Caliphate, Rano traces its origins back to the 18th century. Historical accounts link its foundation to the descendants of Bayajidda, the legendary figure who married Queen Daurama of Daura in present-day Katsina State.
This deep-rooted heritage is reflected in the traditional praise name of the Emirate, “Autan Bawo,” a title borne by every Emir of Rano. Today, that legacy is upheld by His Highness Ambassador Dr. Muhammad Isa Umaru, a monarch widely respected for justice, patience, and compassion. Fondly referred to by his people as “Damo Sarkin Hakuri,” the Emir has consistently placed the welfare of his subjects above personal interest, earning widespread admiration and loyalty.
The Emir’s open-door leadership style, marked by constant engagement with the people, has strengthened trust across the Emirate. His devotion to Islam is evident in the construction of Jumu’ah mosques, the appointment of Imams and their deputies, and his unwavering support for Islamic, Qur’anic, and Western education throughout the Emirate.
Administratively, the Rano Emirate comprises Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure Local Government Areas of Kano State. It shares boundaries with Dawakin Kudu and Kura to the north; Tudun Wada and Doguwa to the south; Bebeji, Garun Malam, and Madobi to the west; and Garko, Sumaila, Doguwa, and Tudun Wada to the east. The Emirate is blessed with vast arable land and mountainous terrain, supporting both dry and rainy season farming and reinforcing its position as a major food-producing area in the state.
Under the reign of Ambassador Dr. Muhammad Isa Umaru, a respected authority in security and social affairs, the Emirate has recorded notable progress in governance and traditional administration. Through wide consultation with the Emirate Council, several district heads and traditional titleholders have been elevated or newly appointed, reinforcing effective leadership at all levels. The Emir’s commitment to collective decision-making has further endeared him to council members, as he consistently respects and upholds their resolutions.
These appointments are part of broader efforts to strengthen traditional institutions, safeguard the interests of the people, and promote law, order, and accountability across the Emirate. His Highness frequently reminds all titleholders that leadership is a trust rooted in service to the people, often stressing that governance loses its meaning if the needs of the populace are not placed at the center.
Regular consultations between the Emir and members of the Emirate Council have become a defining feature of his administration. These engagements focus on assessing the welfare of the people, identifying challenges, and finding practical solutions. As a result, prayers for peace and security are continually observed across the Emirate and Kano State at large.
Education remains a key priority for the Emir. Throughout the year, he has actively supported Qur’anic graduation ceremonies and events organized by Islamic schools, while also extending assistance to government schools to improve teaching and learning conditions. His presence at such gatherings serves as encouragement to students, teachers, and parents alike.
In the area of social welfare, His Highness has continued to support the less privileged by distributing clothing and food items, repairing homes, and providing relief to widows and vulnerable households. These gestures have significantly eased hardship and strengthened communal solidarity.
Youth development has also received special attention. The Emir has championed awareness campaigns against drug abuse through seminars, football competitions, and workshops aimed at guiding young people toward productive and responsible lives.
During the year under review, the Emir’s advocacy on behalf of his people yielded tangible results. His intervention regarding the five-kilometer road project in Rano town prompted swift action from the Kano State Government, leading to a change of contractor and the successful completion of the project. Similarly, his persistent concern over water scarcity in Rano resulted in government commitment and the award of a contract to address the challenge, marking a major step toward lasting solutions.
As preparations continue for the coming year, the Rano Emirate looks ahead with confidence. Guided by the leadership of His Highness Ambassador Dr. Muhammad Isa Umaru, the Emirate remains focused on unity, development, and the collective wellbeing of its people.
