NUJ Kano Suspends Secretary Over Misconduct Allegations; Lauds State Government on Security and Press Freedom
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council, has suspended its Secretary, Abubakar Shehu Kwaru, following allegations of administrative misconduct and financial misappropriation. The decision was ratified during the council’s second congress meeting held at Press Centre.
The suspension will allow for an unhindered investigation by the union’s Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, which is tasked with probing the allegations and submitting its findings.

In a communique issued from the congress, the council also addressed several key state issues, commending the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for its robust efforts in enhancing security. The NUJ specifically applauded the prioritization of security in the 2026 budget and the recent donation of vehicles and motorcycles to the Nigerian Army to bolster operations.
The congress called on security agencies to further intensify efforts to ensure the safety of lives and property across the state and urged public cooperation with law enforcement.
The NUJ expressed its appreciation to Governor Yusuf for fostering an environment of press freedom, allowing journalists to operate without fear or intimidation. The council also commended the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, for establishing the League of Veteran Journalists and strengthening ties with active media practitioners.

In a gesture highlighting support for its members, the congress acknowledged the Director General of Media and Communications to the Governor, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, for covering the medical expenses of veteran journalist Mallam Lawan Isah Bagwai and supporting other ailing union members.
Addressing professional standards, the congress urged all media executives and journalists to uphold the tenets of the Nigerian Journalists’ Code of Ethics. It emphasized accuracy in translation, proper pronunciation of names and titles, and a firm stance against the promotion of banditry or criminal activities.
On sports development, the council highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul of the Kano Pillars Football Club, advocating for better organization and strategic planning to restore the club’s premier status in Nigerian football.
The congress also issued an appeal to the Kano State Fire Service to intensify public sensitization campaigns on fire prevention measures.
The council leadership, under Comrade Suleiman Abdullahi Dederi, was applauded for successfully organizing a Press Week in accordance with the NUJ constitution.
