KNSG Orders Probe of Ganduje, Barau Over Alleged Inciting Statements

The Kano State Government has called for a full-scale investigation into former Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin over remarks it described as inflammatory, misleading, and capable of destabilizing public peace. The announcement was made on Friday evening following the 34th State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Kano.
Addressing journalists shortly after the meeting around 7 p.m., the Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya, said the Council had extensively reviewed recent comments credited to the two political leaders. According to him, the statements—suggesting rising insecurity in Kano and alleging that the state government was planning to recruit 12,000 individuals into a religious policing outfit known as Khairul Nas—were not only false but capable of triggering unnecessary public anxiety.

The Commissioner stated that the Council strongly condemned the remarks, describing them as “inciting, reckless, and capable of undermining the ongoing security efforts” of both the Kano State Government and the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He emphasized that such unguarded assertions could jeopardize the collaborative security framework that has been instrumental in safeguarding lives and property across the state.
Waiya further disclosed that the Council’s concerns were heightened by an attack on border communities by suspected bandits less than 48 hours after the statements were made. The coincidence, he noted, raised serious questions regarding the timing and potential motives behind the remarks, calling for a thorough probe into whether the comments were premeditated or had any connection to the unfortunate incident.

The State Executive Council also reaffirmed its appreciation for the support of security agencies and the Federal Government in the collective fight against insecurity. It called for the arrest and investigation of the former governor over what it described as an attempt to create an illegal militia through false narratives. The government reiterated its appeal to public figures to exercise restraint and avoid statements that could incite unrest or undermine security operations.
While assuring residents of its unwavering commitment to sustaining peace, law, and order across Kano State, the government noted that efforts to obtain responses from Ganduje and Jibrin as at the time of filing this report were unsuccessful.
