Kano State Government Reaffirms Education as Top Priority, Moves to Establish Polytechnic in Gaya

The Kano State Government has restated its commitment to education as a cardinal policy of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration.

This was emphasized  during a site inspection by the newly inaugurated Technical Committee for the establishment of a Polytechnic in Gaya Local Government Area.

Dr. Hadi Bala Yahaya,  Chairman of the Committee and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Higher Education, highlighted the government’s dedication to educational advancement, citing the allocation of over 31% of the state’s 2025 budget to the sector. He noted that the proposed polytechnic in Southern Kano will expand access to quality tertiary education for local students.

“Education remains the bedrock of sustainable development, and this administration is committed to ensuring equitable opportunities for all,” stated Dr. Yahaya. “The establishment of this institution in Gaya will address the longstanding gap in higher education access for our youth.”

During the inspection of two proposed sites—Government Arabic Secondary School, Gaya, and Government Islamic Secondary School, Gaya—the committee received commendation from Alhaji Mahmoud Tajo Gaya, Chairman of Gaya LGA. He praised Governor Yusuf for the initiative, lamenting decades of neglect in the region, where students previously had to travel to Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, or Birnin Kudu for higher education.

“This institution will be a game-changer,” said Alhaji Gaya. “Beyond education, we hope it spurs development in critical areas like potable water supply, where our people currently pay exorbitant rates for basic needs.”

The 15-member Technical Committee, inaugurated on Tuesday by Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, comprises experts from education, engineering, law, and finance, including:
Dr. Hadi Bala Yahaya (Chairman, Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Higher Education),
Dr. Muhammad Umar Kibiya, (Deputy Rector, Kano State Polytechnic), Prof. Auwalu Halliru Arzai (SA Higher Education) , Engr. Yahaya Abubakar Baba(Ministry for Higher Education), Prof. Abba Garba Gaya, (Deputy Dean, ADUSTECH, Wudil), while Dr. LUKMAN T. Siraj (Director, Dev. Partnership Coordination, Ministry of Education will serve as the Committee Secretary)

With the committee already in motion, the Kano State Government signals swift progress toward delivering its promise of inclusive education and regional development.
