Kano Govt Opens Two-Day Retreat for Online Newspaper Publishers in Dutse

The Kano State Government, through the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs, has commenced a two-day retreat for online newspaper publishers under the Kano Online Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Dutse, Jigawa State.

Declaring the retreat open on Wednesday, 14th January, 2026, the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, described the programme as historic and the first of its kind for online journalists in Kano State, noting that it reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening digital journalism through professionalism and ethical standards.

The Commissioner commended the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for approving and sponsoring the retreat, describing the support as a demonstration of visionary leadership and dedication to journalism development and press freedom. He urged participants to uphold accuracy, responsibility, and ethical conduct, while avoiding sensationalism and unregulated practices associated with social media.

Comrade Waiya also emphasized the need for continuous self-development in the face of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, stressing that credibility, integrity, and consistency are essential for building strong and reputable media brands. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to press freedom and disclosed ongoing advocacy for the enactment of a State Freedom of Information Law.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the NUJ Jigawa State Council, Comrade Ismaila Ibrahim Dutse, commended the Kano State Government for hosting the retreat in Jigawa and disclosed that preparations were underway to establish an online media chapel in the state. The retreat features training sessions aimed at enhancing digital journalism practice, professionalism, and ethical reporting.
