Kano State Ministry of Education has constituted a 6-member committee to verify teachers that participated in the Teacher Upgraded Programme (TUP) introduced by the past administration of Engineer Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso aimed at improving teaching profession.
Recall that in March 2014, the administration of Engineer Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso had granted approval to State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to commence the Professional Upgrade of all unqualified teachers in the state to acquire the minimum teaching qualification of NCE/PDE as required in the country.
During the Programme, seven tertiary institutions were engaged on the upgrading programme of the affected teachers with more than 21,899 teachers sent to the institutions whereby 18,529 had successfully graduated.
Announcing the committee, the State Commissioner of the Ministry Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa disclosed that formation of the committee followed request by the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Kano Branch for government to settle outstanding balance of registration fees and other allowances regarding the Teacher Upgraded Programme.
He said the committee was therefore mandated to critically appraise the request of the NUT and offer advice to the government in addressing issues relating to the Programme.
The Commissioner explained that Other terms of reference given to the committee include to find out total number of the students participated in the upgraded programme, to find out the names of the institutions responsible for the programme and to come out with details information of the students in each institutions among others.
Doguwa revealed that the committee has Alhaji Tajuddeen Gambo Special Adviser to the Governor on Education as Chairman, Director Planning, Research and Statistics Ministry of Education Member, Director Monitoring and Evaluation Ministry of Education Member and Director Promotion and Discipline SUBEB Member.
Others are Deputy Director Account Ministry of Education Member and Secretary Admin. and Finance Ministry of Education as Secretary of the committee.
Umar Doguwa expressed optimism that considering the composition of the people involved in the committee, a lot would be achieved on the given terms of reference.
” I believe that this committee has the group of the right persons that are going to do what is required and make sure they come up with good result ” he stated.
He assured of the administration’s commitment to take the best decision on what is going to be submitted as report of the committee, expressing that ….” My doors are opened for any other assistance that would help in actualizing the assignment given to you” .
The Chairman of the Committee who is also the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education Alhaji Tajuddeen Gambo assured the Commissioner of the committee’s commitment to justify the confidence reposed in them.
