As we reflect on the democratic system, a profound truth emerges: leadership is not about region, religion, tribe, or skin color, but about quality and character. The democratic system, with its rich history spanning over two centuries, has consistently demonstrated that merit and competence are the hallmarks of effective leadership.
The Timeless Principles of Democracy:
From its inception in Athens in 508 BC, democracy has evolved into a beautiful and fantastic system, provided its rules, key elements, and principles are strictly adhered to. The United States, with its 232-year history of democratic governance, serves as a shining example of representative government and the rule of law.
The American Presidency: A Study in Meritocracy
A fascinating aspect of American democracy is the fact that all 46 Presidents have been born in various states across the United States, with no regard for region, religion, or tribe. This is a testament to the power of meritocracy, where leaders are chosen based on their abilities and character, rather than their background or connections.
Nigeria’s Democratic Journey:
As we consider Nigeria’s place in the democratic world, we note that, according to the Democracy Index, Mauritius, Japan, and Uruguay are exemplary models of democratic excellence in their respective regions. While Nigeria still has a long way to go in its democratic journey, we can draw valuable lessons from these countries and strive to create a more robust and inclusive democratic system. The ambition of any elected Democrat is to ensure peace, security, economic audacity, sound education, employment opportunities, healthcare system, human rights, decent accommodation and fairness and justice.

In conclusion, leadership is about doing what is excellent for the yearning and aspirations of the people. It is about merit, competence, patriotism, knowledge, experience, sound health, read to lead and a willingness to serve. As we continue on our democratic journey, let us remember these timeless principles and strive to create a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.
