Journalists, Security Personnel Attacked at APC Rally in Kano

Five journalists and security personnel narrowly escaped harm after suspected thugs attacked a media vehicle shortly after an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Saturday.
The incident occurred after the inauguration of the leadership of a coalition of groups supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as journalists were leaving the venue after covering the political gathering.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailants, armed with machetes and knives, attacked a Radio Nigeria, Pyramid FM vehicle conveying journalists, smashing its windows and causing extensive damage.
The journalists affected include Shafiu Abdullahi Panshekara, Abdulmajid Habib Isa Tukuntawa, Yakubu Abubakar Gwagwarwa, Ibrahim Hussaini of Radio Nigeria, Pyramid FM Kano, and Abdulbaki Ali Ahmed Sharifai of Guarantee Radio.
Also inside the vehicle during the attack were the orderly attached to the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Hajiya Mariya Mahmud Bunkure, personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Political Adviser to former Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
One of the affected journalists disclosed that the attackers continued to assault the vehicle despite the presence of security personnel, creating panic and confusion among the occupants.
The incident has heightened concerns over the safety of journalists covering political events in Kano, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections. The attack has also raised questions about the circumstances that enabled the assailants to target a vehicle carrying media professionals and security personnel without immediate intervention.
As of the time of this report, the motive behind the attack had not been established, while there was no official confirmation of any arrests made in connection with the incident.
The attack is expected to prompt renewed calls from media organisations, professional bodies, and other stakeholders for a comprehensive investigation and the prosecution of those responsible.
Stakeholders have also reiterated the need for authorities to strengthen the protection of journalists, emphasizing that members of the media must be allowed to carry out their constitutional and professional responsibilities without fear of intimidation, harassment, or violence.
