The Chairman of Dala Local Government Area, Malam Suraj Ibrahim Imam, has clarified that the decision to restrict public access to Dala Hill was taken jointly with the Nigeria Police Force as a proactive measure to safeguard lives, protect property, and maintain peace and security in the area.
The Chairman explained that Dala Hill, one of Kano’s most historic landmarks, had traditionally attracted visitors seeking to explore its rich cultural heritage, enjoy its natural environment, and view the city from its elevated location. However, he noted that the situation has changed significantly in recent times.

According to Malam Suraj, the site has increasingly become associated with activities that threaten public safety, including gang violence, drug abuse, and other forms of anti-social behaviour, prompting the local government and security agencies to take decisive action.
“We restricted access to Dala Hill because we believe it is in the best interest of our people. While the hill was once a peaceful destination for visitors, it has increasingly become a venue for gang clashes, drug abuse, and other unacceptable activities. As a responsible government, we have a duty to take necessary measures to protect lives and property,” he stated.
The Chairman stressed that effective leadership sometimes requires making difficult but necessary decisions in the interest of the wider community, even when such decisions may not be immediately popular.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Dala Local Government Council to working closely with security agencies to prevent criminal activities, violence, and behaviours capable of undermining public peace and the moral wellbeing of young people.
Malam Suraj further clarified that the restriction was not intended to deny residents access to the historic site but to ensure that lives, public safety, and peaceful coexistence remain the government’s foremost priorities.
He expressed support for the future development of Dala Hill into a secure recreational and tourism destination where residents and visitors can safely appreciate its historical, cultural, and environmental significance. He noted, however, that such access must be supported by proper management and adequate security measures to prevent the area from becoming a haven for criminal activities.
The Chairman appealed to parents, religious and traditional leaders, teachers, community stakeholders, and youths to support the decision and cooperate with the local government and security agencies in promoting peace, discipline, and public safety.
He reiterated that the ultimate goal of the administration is to build a secure and peaceful community, emphasizing that no recreational activity or development initiative should compromise human lives, public health, or the security of society.
