Gwarzo LG Chairman Urges Parents to Strengthen Child Safety to Prevent Fire Accidents

The Executive Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government Area, Dr. Mani Tsoho, has called on parents and guardians to intensify the monitoring of their children to prevent domestic fire accidents. He made the call while addressing newsmen at his office in the Gwarzo Local Government Secretariat.
Dr. Tsoho emphasized that fire incidents remain one of the most devastating domestic hazards, often leading to severe destruction of property and, in some cases, tragic loss of lives. He noted that such incidents are largely preventable when proper supervision and safety measures are put in place within households.
According to the Chairman, children are naturally curious and may unknowingly expose themselves to danger when fire-related items are left within their reach. He warned that carelessly placing matches, lighters, and other flammable tools around the home could lead to serious accidents, especially when children are left unattended.
He stressed the need for parents to secure all fire-related materials in safe and inaccessible locations. Dr. Tsoho also urged parents to educate their children on the dangers of playing with fire, while instilling safe habits during cooking and other daily activities. He reiterated that many domestic fire outbreaks could be avoided through close supervision and adherence to basic safety practices.
Dr. Tsoho further encouraged community members to promptly report unsafe practices that could trigger fire incidents. He appealed to local schools to incorporate fire safety education into their curriculum, noting that early sensitization can save lives and reduce future risks. He also assured residents that the local government remains committed to enhancing fire safety awareness across all wards through targeted sensitization programs.
The Chairman advised families, particularly those using open flames, kerosene stoves, or charcoal for cooking, to maintain strict supervision around cooking areas. He cautioned against leaving children alone near stoves, candles, and electrical appliances capable of igniting a fire, emphasizing that simple home safety rules—such as proper disposal of flammable materials—can go a long way in preventing accidents.
Dr. Tsoho highlighted the importance of community vigilance, urging neighbors to support one another by reporting emergencies or suspicious situations that could pose fire risks. He concluded by reminding parents that safeguarding their children from fire hazards is a key responsibility of responsible parenting. He called on all residents to take fire prevention seriously and work collectively to build a safer and more secure environment for all.
