Katsina Government Commends Mercy Corps for Strengthening Peace in Rural Communities

Katsina State Government has praised Mercy Corps, an international non-governmental organization, for its pivotal role in enhancing peace and fostering social cohesion in rural communities across the state.
The commendation was delivered by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Engineer Sirajo Yazid Abukur, during the closing ceremony of a four-day intensive Peacebuilding Training for youths organized by Mercy Corps. The programme brought together 50 participants from Sabuwa, Safana, Dandume, and Faskari Local Government Areas.

The training covered core peacebuilding components such as conflict analysis, negotiation techniques, mediation skills, and community resilience. Experts highlighted the importance of collective community action in addressing mistrust, misinformation, and unemployment—factors that often fuel local conflicts.
While declaring the training closed, Engr. Abukur described Mercy Corps as a dependable partner to the state government in its ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability.
“We commend Mercy Corps for working with the Katsina State Government to address insecurity in our communities. The organization remains a key partner in promoting peace, especially at the grassroots,” he said.
He added that the skills gained by participants would empower them to resolve conflicts effectively and contribute to sustaining peace in their communities. Engr. Abukur also reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting Mercy Corps in implementing its peace-oriented programmes across the state.

Earlier, Mercy Corps Programme Manager, Philip Ikita, stated that the training focused on early conflict detection as a crucial tool for preventing violence. He urged participants to disseminate the knowledge acquired to others in their communities to maximize its impact.
A participant from Dandume Local Government Area, Nasiba, expressed her appreciation, noting that the programme equipped her with practical peacebuilding skills and empowered her as a woman contributing to conflict prevention.
