Kano State to Strengthen Health Standards Through Review of Minimum Service Package (MSP) and WASH Integration
KSPHCMB partners with UNICEF and key stakeholders to align Primary Health Care standards with global best practices

The Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board (KSPHCMB) has commenced the review and update of the Domesticated Minimum Service Package (MSP) for healthcare to enhance the quality, safety, and inclusiveness of Primary Health Care (PHC) services across the state.
Originally developed several years ago, the MSP incorporated limited Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) components such as boreholes, waste disposal systems, handwashing stations, and gender-separated toilet facilities. However, the existing framework lacked clarity and comprehensiveness, leading to gaps that risked exposing patients, clients, and healthcare workers to infections arising from inadequate WASH infrastructure.

To address these challenges and ensure compliance with international health standards, the SPHCMB has initiated a comprehensive review process designed to align the MSP with the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Program (JMP) for WASH in healthcare facilities.
A planning meeting, chaired by the Director of Medical Services, brought together key partners and technical experts, including:

UNICEF WASH Consultants and Officers
Directors and representatives from DPCM, DDMS, and RUWASA
WASH Desk Officers from the Ministry of Health and KSPHCMB
MSP Monitoring Team members
The meeting focused on developing an updated, evidence-based guideline that comprehensively addresses WASH issues in PHC facilities, aiming to promote infection prevention, improve service delivery, and protect the health and well-being of both patients and healthcare personnel.
Speaking at the session, officials commended the collaboration with UNICEF and other development partners for their continued technical support and commitment to strengthening the state’s health system.
