KNSG Unveils Strategy to Advance Girls’ Education

Kano State Government today announced a comprehensive set of strategic plans to dramatically advance girls’ education, emphasizing gender-responsive budgeting and collaborative partnerships. The announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, during the opening of the two-day Kano Girls’ Education Summit 2025.
In a statement signed by the Director Public Enlightenment Ministry of Education Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru stated that, The summit, themed “Investing In Her Future – Advancing Girls’ Education Through Equitable Budgeting,” was organized by the Bridge Connect Africa Initiative under the Malala Fund in collaboration with the Kano State Government. It brings together education stakeholders to shape policies and ensure targeted budget allocation for girls’ education.

In his keynote address, Dr. Makoda underscored the administration’s commitment. “Strengthening girls’ education through proper budget allocation and strategic investment is not just an educational goal; it is a cornerstone for promoting gender equality and achieving sustainable development in Kano State,” he stated.
Highlighting education as a top priority, Dr. Makoda revealed a significant and growing financial commitment, with the education sector allocation rising from 29.79% in 2024 to 31.5% in 2025. A specific portion of this budget is directly targeted at initiatives for girls.

“Our actions speak to our commitment,” Dr. Makoda said. “We have already repaired over 70 grounded girl-child shuttle buses, conducted a comprehensive review of the Girl-Child Policy, and provided conditional cash transfers to support less privileged girls in continuing their education.”
The Commissioner assured that the government will continue to work closely with civil society organizations, educators, and community leaders to implement relevant policies and programs. He commended the Bridge Connect Africa Initiative and the Malala Fund for their support in hosting the timely summit, which aligns with the significant investments being made by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration.
Echoing the Commissioner’s remarks, Haladu Muhammad, Technical Adviser to the Kano State Governor on Education Reforms, detailed the multifaceted benefits of investing in girls. “When we educate a girl, we ignite a powerful catalyst for change. This investment leads directly to increased economic growth, reduced poverty, improved public health, and the genuine empowerment of our women and communities,” Muhammad stated.
He also highlighted key government initiatives such as the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), which is actively working to enhance secondary education opportunities for adolescent girls across the state.
