FIRS Celebrates Customer Service Week, Commends Kano State For Prompt Tax Payment

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Kano State office marked its annual Customer Service Week with a celebration aimed at recognizing the critical role of taxpayers and stakeholders in national development. The event highlighted significant revenue achievements and ongoing reforms to simplify tax compliance.
In his welcome address, the FIRS Coordinator for Kano State, Alhaji Fatuhu Adamu, announced a landmark performance, revealing that the Service has already achieved 92% of its national annual revenue target by September 2025.

“The local success here in Kano proudly mirrors the national achievements,” Adamu stated. “The FIRS as a whole has collected N24 trillion against an annual target of N25 trillion. We are likely to surpass the full-year target in the first quarter, a remarkable trajectory driven significantly by non-oil revenue growth, which now accounts for 50 percent of our total collection.”
He expressed profound appreciation to Federal and State Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), as well as the 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State, for their prompt payment of taxes. Adamu emphasized that “taxpayers are of great value because they are the drivers of development of any country,” and outlined the Service’s commitment to continuous improvement, noting strategic reforms since 2007 focused on simplifying taxation and maximizing revenue through technology investments. He also commended the dedication of the Kano FIRS management and staff.
Echoing the theme of modernization, the Kano State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Usman, reflected on the evolution of the Tax Identification Number (TIN) system. He recalled the initial mandatory compliance drive during the 2009-2011 period and contrasted it with today’s environment.

“This time around, people are encouraged through voluntary compliance as the process is now made easy and transparent,” Commissioner Usman said. “You can access and make payments without any interference from any tax collector.”
The Commissioner also affirmed the Kano State Government’s commitment under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, highlighting prompt tax payments as a priority. He urged the FIRS to further increase public awareness by setting up outlets in public spaces like markets and to visibly demonstrate how tax revenue benefits communities through projects like roads, schools, and boreholes.
The Chairman of Dala Local Government Area, Alhaji Surajo Ibrahim Imam, who was honored as one of the best-performing LGAs in revenue generation, used the opportunity to call on individuals, corporate organizations, and government bodies to remain steadfast in their tax obligations.
“We must not relent in the prompt payment of taxes as it is fundamental to the development of our country,” Imam stated.
The event served to strengthen the partnership between the FIRS and key stakeholders, reinforcing a shared commitment to a robust and efficient tax system for Nigeria’s progress.
