Accurate and Timely GDP Key to National Development, Says Statistician General at NCCS Meeting in Katsina

The first bi-annual meeting of the National Consultative Committee on Statistics (NCCS) has commenced in Katsina State, with a focus on enhancing sub-national development through improved Gross Domestic Product (GDP) compilation.

Held under the theme *“Promoting Development at Sub-National Level Through Improved GDP Compilation,”* the three-day gathering brings together statisticians from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to strategize on strengthening state-level economic data.

In his keynote address, the Statistician General of the Federation and CEO of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, emphasized the critical role of accurate and timely GDP data in driving inclusive, evidence-based development.

*“The compilation of state-level GDP stands out as a vital instrument for informed policymaking and sustainable growth,”* Prince Adeniran stated. *“This meeting will spark insightful dialogue, generate practical solutions, and lay the groundwork for significant progress in economic planning.”*

He called on stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, and development practitioners, to recognize the value of improved state GDP data in fostering national progress.

Katsina State Governor, His Excellency Dikko Umar Radda, commended the NBS for supporting the state in compiling its GDP figures for 2018–2023. Represented by Deputy Governor Faruk Lawal Jobe, the governor reaffirmed the state’s commitment to data-driven governance, describing statistics as *“essential for effective planning and policy implementation.”*

*“We will soon commence the compilation of the 2024 and 2025 GDP figures,”* he announced, pledging full financial support to the Katsina State Bureau of Statistics to ensure seamless execution. Governor Radda also urged participants to develop innovative methodologies for GDP computation and propose solutions to accelerate development at the sub-national level.

The NCCS meeting serves as a pivotal platform for advancing Nigeria’s statistical framework, with expected outcomes including refined GDP compilation techniques and actionable strategies for economic growth.
