The history of Chambers of Commerce is a rich and fascinating one, both globally, Kano State and in Nigeria.

*Global Perspective:

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) was founded in 1919 with a mission to make business work for everyone, every day, everywhere by promoting open international trade and investment systems.

This legacy of the founders, known as “Merchants of Peace,” believed that strong commercial ties among nations would foster peace, prosperity, and opportunity for all.

Today, the ICC represents members in over 170 countries, advocating for multilateralism and addressing global economic challenges.

*Nigerian Perspective:

In Nigeria, the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry pioneered the chamber movement in 1888, during British colonial rule. The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA) was established in 1960 and has since grown into a prominent organization with 63 member chambers across the country. NACCIMA’s primary objective is to create a conducive atmosphere for commerce, industry, and economic activities, also influencing government policies, economic activities and programs.

*Key Functions of NACCIMA:

1. Policy Advocacy:

Advocating for favorable policies that promote business growth and development

2. Business and Trade:

Connecting members with potential partners, clients, and suppliers in both within and outside Nigeria

3. Capacity Building:

Enhancing skills and knowledge through training programs

4. Research and Market Insights:

Providing market trends, industry insights, and economic data

5. History of Chambers of Commerce:

The history of Chambers of Commerce highlights their vital role in promoting economic growth, trade, and investment, both globally, Kano State and indeed in Nigeria. By understanding their significance, we can appreciate the impact of these organizations on businesses and communities worldwide.

*History of Chamber of Commerce in Kano:

The Kano Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (KACCIMA) has a rich history in Nigeria, dating back to 1922 . Founded as one of the prominent Chambers of Commerce in Nigeria, KACCIMA is an autonomous body governed by its members and operates in a strictly non-political manner. Its primary objective is to promote economic growth and development in Kano State and beyond.

*Key Milestones:

Founding Member:

KACCIMA was one of the founding members and pioneer signatories of the National Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA).

*Membership:

Today, KACCIMA under the able leadership of Malam Garba Imam, 12 Council members and Director General Sabi’u Umar Yola boasts over 3,000 members, comprising small, medium, and large industrial businesses, commercial agriculture enterprises, financial institutions, and professional establishments.

*Trade Promotions:

The chamber organizes annual trade fairs for the past 45 years and exhibitions to promote international, local goods and services.

*Objectives:
KACCIMA aims to:

1. Develop commerce, industry, mines, and agriculture in Kano State, Nigeria and globally

2. Promote private sector interests and the public in general

3. Establish meaningful economic relationships with foreign countries


*Services:

KACCIMA offers various services to its members, including:

1. Statistical information on trade, commerce, and shipping, import and export

2. Protection against undue harassment from government policies

3. Networking opportunities with successful industrialists, businessmen, and professionals

By understanding KACCIMA’s history and objectives, we can appreciate its significant role in promoting economic growth and development in Kano State, Nigeria and global sphere.
