Kano, Katsina & Jigawa Seal ₦50bn Energy Deal to Boost Northern Economy

The Governments of Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States have signed a historic ₦50 billion Tri-State Energy Investment Agreement. The deal, spearheaded by Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, is set to transform the region’s power infrastructure and establish a robust framework for sustainable development.

In a statement signed by Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa Director General Media and Publicity Government House Kano State, stated that, The agreement was finalized at the High-Level Electrification Summit in Marrakech, Morocco (October 16-19, 2025). This strategic partnership will see the three states collaboratively create a regional electricity market and acquire significant equity stakes in Future Energies Africa (FEA), the core investor in the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO).

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the initiator of the collaborative framework, stated that the partnership is a cornerstone of his administration’s agenda for energy sufficiency and economic revival.

“Our goal is to make Kano the industrial heartbeat of Northern Nigeria once again,” Governor Yusuf said. “By investing in regional energy solutions, we are empowering businesses, creating jobs, and ensuring reliable electricity that drives prosperity across our communities.”

 

A key component of the deal is the establishment of a ₦50 billion Electrification Fund. This fund will be channeled into expanding electricity access through diverse means, including embedded power generation, grid extension, mini-grids, and solar home systems, ensuring a multi-pronged approach to tackling energy poverty.

Dr. Gaddafi Sani Shehu, Kano State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, emphasized the transformative potential of the initiative. He explained that the investment is designed to enhance KEDCO’s operational efficiency and unlock the vast, untapped economic potential of the region through improved power supply and management.

This Tri-State Agreement represents a bold vision by the Kano State Government to create a stable and sustainable energy ecosystem. It positions Kano and its neighboring states as a premier hub for power, investment, and industrial growth in Nigeria, reaffirming a commitment to innovation, good governance, and people-centered development.
