When the chronicles of integrity, courage, and transformation in northern Nigeria are written, Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure will stand tall as one of the finest reformers of his generation. His journey from academia to politics and now to national service tells a story of vision under fire, honor under pressure, and leadership above deceit.
As Provost of the Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Professor Bunkure’s leadership brought about an unprecedented transformation in the institution’s history. Under his steady hand, the College witnessed a rebirth marked by infrastructural expansion, academic modernization, and digital innovation. He introduced modern learning systems, strengthened research culture, prioritized staff welfare, and created an environment where students could thrive beyond expectations. These achievements laid the foundation for what would become his greatest accomplishment, the historic elevation of Sa’adatu Rimi College to a full-fledged University of Education, approved by the Federal Government.
It was a moment of triumph for education in Kano State, and a testament to Bunkure’s visionary leadership and tireless dedication. But in Kano’s political theatre, progress often attracts hostility. When a new administration assumed power, its agenda was not about continuity or consolidation, it was about revenge and erasure. The politics of vendetta became the new policy direction. Every achievement associated with the Ganduje-led era was targeted for reversal, regardless of its value to the people.
Among the victims of that reckless political witch-hunt was the newly elevated Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, cruelly demoted back to College status, not because it lacked merit, but because it was a symbol of the Ganduje administration’s success.
At the center of this senseless reversal was Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure, a man who dared to achieve excellence where others thrived on mediocrity. The move was not just an administrative downgrade, it was a deliberate attempt to humiliate him and destroy a legacy built on sweat, scholarship, and sincerity.
Yet, the Professor refused to bow. Calm, disciplined, and unmoved by propaganda, he allowed his record of excellence to speak louder than their deceit. Fate, however, always rewards the steadfast. In a moment of poetic justice, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, known for recognizing competence and rewarding merit, appointed Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure as the Pioneer Vice Chancellor of the newly established Federal University of Education Zaria.

That appointment was more than a professional milestone, it was a national vindication, a loud message that the Federal Government stands for merit over mediocrity.
Now, the nation watches as Professor Bunkure brings his proven expertise and unwavering discipline into this new federal institution. Under his leadership, the University is expected to blossom into a national hub for teacher education, innovation, and research excellence.
His development blueprint focuses on:
-Academic excellence through global-standard programs and professional training;
-Infrastructure development, modern lecture halls, laboratories, hostels, and ICT facilities;
-Research partnerships with international universities;
-Student empowerment through entrepreneurship and vocational training; and
-Community impact projects that will connect academia with rural development.
For Professor Bunkure, education is not just a career, it is a lifelong mission to rebuild society through knowledge. Beyond academia, Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure is also a grassroots political pillar,the recognized leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bunkure Local Government. His style of leadership is one of fairness, consultation, and integrity.
He has continued to uphold the values of discipline, inclusion, and unity within the party, ensuring that every member, young or old, has a voice in decision-making. His credibility and maturity have made him a stabilizing force in Bunkure politics, where his words carry respect, and his judgment commands trust.
But as always, success attracts detractors. Enter Dan Bilki Commander, a self-acclaimed activist turned political opportunist, whose reputation for blackmail and noise precedes him. Recently, Dan Bilki launched a baseless campaign of falsehood against the Professor, using radio programs to castigate and malign him with claims of bias and selfishness in party affairs, all without a shred of truth or evidence.
In truth, these were nothing but the antics of a desperate political attention-seeker, a man known for switching loyalties in search of financial reward, a renowned political prostitute whose only motivation is publicity and patronage.
He thought that by attacking Professor Bunkure, he could provoke a reaction or earn a payoff to silence his tongue. But he miscalculated. In Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure, he met a wall of steel, a man who neither stoops to the gutter nor rewards dishonor.
The Professor refused to engage in cheap media fights, choosing instead to let his transparent leadership style and results speak for themselves. And as always, truth triumphed over noise. His calmness, maturity, and refusal to be dragged into street politics only earned him greater admiration from party faithful and the people of Bunkure.
Today, Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure stands as a shining example of what leadership should be, a rare combination of intellect, discipline, and integrity.
In both education and politics, he has proven that character is stronger than conspiracy and truth will always outlive propaganda.
Those who tried to destroy him have only helped build his legacy. Those who lied about him have only amplified his truth. And those who thought they could bury him have now realized, they buried a seed.
As he leads the Federal University of Education Zaria into a new era of progress, and as he continues to anchor APC’s stability in Bunkure, one message echoes across Kano and beyond:
“You can fight a man of position — but you can never defeat a man of purpose.”
