Kano Government Partners with FRSC to Enhance Road Safety and Protect Lives

The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving road safety and protecting the lives and property of residents through a strengthened collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

In a statement signed by the Director Public Enlightenment of the Ministry Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru stressed that, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf made this known on Thursday during a town hall meeting organized by the FRSC Kano State Command, where he emphasized the state’s ongoing investment in road infrastructure, safety enforcement, and public awareness.

Represented by the Commissioner, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Alhaji Adamu Aliyu Kibiya, the Governor stated that his administration is prioritizing road safety through projects such as the installation of solar-powered traffic lights, street lighting, and rehabilitation of major roads across the state.

“These efforts can be clearly seen through the provision of solar traffic lights, street lights, and the rehabilitation of roads across the nooks and crannies of the state, as well as the enhancement of road traffic personnel and collaboration with relevant agencies to reduce accidents and promote public safety,” Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf stated.

The Governor commended the FRSC’s theme for this year’s safety campaign, “Take Responsibility for Your Safety,” describing it as timely and relevant. He noted that while government bears the responsibility of providing safe roads and enforcing traffic laws, individual drivers and road users must also adopt safe habits behind the wheel.

“The safety of lives and property on our roads ultimately depends on the conduct, discipline, and sense of responsibility of every driver and road user,” the Governor emphasized.

He urged motorists and commercial drivers to avoid over-speeding, overloading, phone distractions, and unnecessary night driving, especially during the ember months when road accidents tend to increase due to higher travel activities and impatience among drivers.

Governor Yusuf also commended the FRSC Kano Command for its remarkable efforts in promoting safety awareness and reducing road crashes through continuous public enlightenment and patrol operations.

In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor and former Corps Marshal of FRSC, Dr. Danyaro Ali Yakasai, acknowledged that although accident statistics in the state have shown a significant reduction, more work remains to be done — particularly in regulating the operations of commercial tricycle (KEKE-NAPEP) riders, who often contribute to traffic congestion and distractions on the road.

“Research has shown that many distractions come from this category of drivers or riders. It is high time to correct this situation and restore proper road discipline,” Dr. Yakasai stated.

Earlier, the Sector Commander of FRSC Kano State Command, Corps Commander Idris Mohammed Lawal, noted that the 2025 road safety campaign aims to raise public consciousness about the dangers of distracted driving and to promote a culture of caution and discipline among motorists.

He revealed that over 90 percent of road crashes nationwide are caused by human factors such as excessive speeding, fatigue, and distraction — all of which are preventable with proper awareness and responsible behavior.

“Distracted driving caused by mobile phone use, eating, deep conversations, or operating vehicle gadgets diverts attention from the road and significantly increases the risk of fatal crashes,” he warned.

Commander Lawal also appreciated Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his administration’s continued support to the FRSC and commitment to ensuring safety and orderliness on Kano roads.

Representatives of sister security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, as well as transport unions and associations — also attended the event, pledging to work collaboratively to reduce traffic accidents during the ember months.

The meeting concluded with a shared call to action for all road users to “take responsibility” for their safety and contribute to a culture of caution, discipline, and respect for traffic regulations.
