Katsina Grand Khadi Commends Governor Radda for Upholding Judiciary Autonomy

The Grand Khadi of Katsina State, His Honour, Professor Mohammed Kabir Abubakar, has publicly commended His Excellency, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, for his commitment to the financial autonomy of the State Judiciary, in full compliance with the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

The Grand Khadi offered this commendation during the official ceremony marking the commencement of the 2025/2026 (1447 AH) Sharia Legal Year.

In his address, Professor Abubakar stated that the timely release of funds to the judiciary is a clear indicator of the Governor’s dedication to the principle of an independent judiciary. “We commend Governor Radda for compliance with the requirements of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) regarding the independence and autonomy of the state Judiciary,” he said.

The Grand Khadi also extended his appreciation to the Katsina State House of Assembly for their deep concern and support in the establishment of Islamic justice in the state.

While expressing gratitude for the current support, Professor Abubakar respectfully appealed to the state government to consider an increase in allowances for overseas seminars and training for judicial staff, citing the current economic realities of inflation and foreign exchange rate fluctuations.

Reflecting on the outgoing legal year, the Grand Khadi reported significant progress across the Sharia Court of Appeal. Key achievements highlighted include, The Court  registered, heard, and disposed of a substantial number of cases, motions, and applications,The welfare of staff was given necessary attention, with the settlement of outstanding entitlements as well as promoting many junior staff to various grade levels and recommended senior staff for promotion to the Judicial Service Commission.

·Others includes , Court sponsored seminars, workshops, and training programs to enhance the skills of its personnel and completion of a new Auditorium and Chambers for Khadis to be appointed this year.

More areas includes, Rule Review: In response to observations and suggestions from the Nigerian Bar Association (Funtua Branch), the Grand Khadi announced that the Sharia Court of Appeal rules would be reviewed to ensure continued efficiency and justice, Bar-Bench Relationship:

Professor Abubakar expressed his satisfaction with the harmonious relationship existing between the Bar and the Bench in the state.Revival of Sharia Commission:

The Grand Khadi announced the revival of the Sharia Commission, noting that new members would soon be inaugurated to resume its vital duties.

The event was attended by members of the judiciary, legal practitioners, and government officials, marking a hopeful and progressive start to the new legal year.
