Kano State Bolsters Healthcare with Major Distribution of Free Maternal and Emergency Supplies

In it’s efforts to combat maternal and child mortality, the Kano State Government has launched its monthly distribution of free maternity kits and Accident & Emergency (A&E) commodities to healthcare facilities statewide. This initiative, a cornerstone of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s health sector reform agenda, underscores a deep commitment to providing equitable, quality healthcare for all residents.

The symbolic distribution event highlighted the administration’s proactive approach to safeguarding the lives of mothers and newborns. The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, stated that the program is designed to fulfill a key campaign promise by reducing financial barriers and ensuring access to essential care for the most vulnerable.
“His Excellency Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has made a bold commitment to reduce maternal and child mortality by providing free, safe, and efficient healthcare services,” Dr. Yusuf said. “This monthly provision of vital commodities is a direct intervention to ease the burden on families and ensure every woman, regardless of her economic standing, can access quality care during childbirth.”

The distributed items include 6,000 kits for normal deliveries and 600 kits for cesarean sections, alongside critical A&E commodities and life-saving equipment. This strategic allocation is expected to not only save lives but also enhance the capacity of healthcare facilities to respond effectively to medical emergencies.
The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, expressed profound gratitude for the Governor’s unwavering support. He described the initiative as a “true reflection of people-centered governance” that is repositioning the state’s healthcare system.
Dr. Nagoda also emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the process, stating, “The use of the utilization register is compulsory to ensure proper documentation and tracking of all distributed commodities, guaranteeing they reach and benefit the intended recipients.”
The event was attended by key stakeholders, including the Director General of the Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency (DMSCA), Pharm. Ghali Sule, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Mustapha Muhammed, as well as Chief Medical Directors and senior health officials, who collectively applauded the administration’s focus on the welfare of women and children.

This distribution exercise marks another historic milestone in Governor Yusuf’s ongoing reforms, solidifying his vision to build a healthier Kano where no mother or child is left behind.
